CSD 14 & 15- Energy for sustainable development, industrial development, air pollution/ atmosphere and climate change :

(1) Provide a coordination role for the preparation of a regional position paper that will contribute towards a regional submission to the CSD Secretariat.

(2) Provide support to the New York based PIC missions at the CSD14 & 15.

(3) Provide support as required to National initiatives in regard to the CSD processes

Installation of the Wave Rider Buoy off Avatiu Harbour : Installation of the buoys were part of SOPACS's wave measurement progarmme in conjunction with the Norwaeigian govt. Four wave rider buoys have been installed in the Cook Islands.

Energy Mission to the Republic of Kiribati : The Energy Mission to Kiribati was carried out from the 12th to the 17th of April 2003. It was arranged to link in with the mission to the Marshall Islands. The objective of the mission was to work with staff of the Energy Planning Unit on energy projects as listed under the country Task Profiles. Opportunity was taken to meet with staff in other organisations and discuss with them issues relevant to the development of the energy sector in Kiribati.

Solar Pump Maintenance Workshop in Kiribati : Objectives: To train 20 outer islands water technicians on the maintenance of solar water pumps.

Consultation Workshop on the Development of the Tonga National Renewable Energy Policy Framework : The first of the three consultation workshops on the development of the Tonga National Renewable Energy Policy Framework was carried out in Tongatapu from 29 April to 5 May 2005. The consultation workshop is part of the Pacific Islands Energy Policy and Strategic Action Planning Project (PIEPSAP) activity in Tonga.The consultation workshop was split into two components.

Energy Conservation Project : The objective of the project is to demonstrate that sizable energy savings can be achieved through improved housekeeping practices and
the refurbishment of electrical fittings (lights, air conditioners, etc) in government offices.

Mangalilu Hydro Battery Pilot Project : A pilot micro hydropower battery charging project as a basis for rural electrification, to provide lighting to village households.

Solar Cooking Demonstration Workshop in Kiribati : The use of solar energy in everyday cooking at a domestic level and in replacing the conventional ways of cooking using firewood in an open fire or on kerosene stoves was demonstrated via this project. SOPAC and the Ferris University (of Japan) implemented the activities in collaboration with the Energy Planning Unit in Kiribati.
