Pacific Islands Energy Policy and Strategic Action Planning (PIEPSAP) : Improved development and management of national energy sectors. The PIEPSAP Project PIEPSAP has
progressed now to a point where vertical national integration and horizontal regional integration becomes clearly visible. By way of example of vertical integration the policy
development has been followed by strategic action planning which in turn identified practical activities such as support for GIS development, electrcity tariff review and project development activities in the area of small-scale hydro, etc.

Liquid biofuels in Pacific island countries

Biofuel Energy Options : Biofuel energy options for the region have become more relevant as the trend for the price of crude oil continues upward. There has been a consequent increase in interest in evaluating the viability of alternative fuel options, especially locally-produced biofuels. SOPAC in its technical advisory capacity has continued to monitor progress and to distribute factual information on research findings and international development in the sector through its website and e-mail user group list.

COCOGEN Project : A number of Pacific Island countries have started to consider biofuels as a strategic renewable energy option. First successful trials to use straight coconut oil (CNO) have been undertaken in Fiji, Marshall Islands New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Both the University of the South Pacific and the University of Papua New Guinea have started scientific research on the subject.
