Promoting Energy Efficiency in the Pacific (Phase 2): Development of Energy Use Database - Initial Baseline Data on Energy Use

This report was prepared by the International Institute for Energy Conservation for the Asian Development Bank.

The project is being implemented by the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) over a 3-year period starting from November 2011. This report was prepared to outline initial baseline data on energy use in the five PDMCs based on the Output 1 activities (data compilations and initial surveys)
undertaken in each country from January to September 2012.

Pacific Nama Guidelines

This report was prepared by Murray Ward for the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme. On the one hand, that developing countries should agree to undertake nationally appropriate mitigation actions, reflects the enormity of the global challenge to limit global warming to 2°C (or 1.5°C which is the position of PICs) and that action by developed countries alone will not achieve this.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells & The Pacific Islands

This report was prepared by Rupeni Mario. This paper is the result of discussions held during the Regional Energy Meeting (REM) 2000 and the SOPAC STAR Energy Working Group 2000 meeting which noted the need to provide technical information on “New Energy Technologies”, in particular, hydrogen fuel, ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) and space solar power generation. As Pacific island countries vary widely in terms of natural resource endowment and energy use patterns, they still remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels to meet their increasing energy needs.

Geothermal Power Potential of Selected Pacific Nations

This report has been prepared by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS Science) exclusively for and under contract to Ministry of Research Science and Technology. This desktop study provides an overview of the geothermal potential of selected Pacific islands and territories. It has been based on an initial literature review of 20 Pacific countries and then a subsequent more detailed review of five Pacific countries, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Review of the PREFACE Project

The review team consisted of Herbert Wade (rural electrification), Yves Lambert (renewable energy) and Marion Ferguson (community and social development). The PREFACE programme is an $3.45 million joint effort of Australia and France with the goal of advancing social and economic development through the use of sustainable renewable energy technologies in the Pacific region. The stated purpose of the project is to increase the utilization of sustainable renewable energy technologies, in particular solar photovoltaics and wind energy technologies, in island and rural communities.

Wind Resource Maps of the Far East Islands

This report was prepared by AWS Truewind for the World Bank. Using its WindSurvey system, AWS has produced maps of the predicted long term annual wind speed at heights of 12, 25 and 45 meters above ground and with a grid spacing of 1000m for the Far East Islands (PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji). The wind maps indicate that the low lying areas in southwestern Papua New Guinea has the best wind resource in that country. These speeds can be partially attributed to low surface roughness values and their perpendicular orientation  to the prevailing southeasterly winds.
