The SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) in partnership with the SADC Development Finance Resource Centre (SADC-DFRC), University of Pretoria Centre for Human Rights and Boston University’s Global Development Policy (GDP) Center held a workshop with regional development finance institutions (DFI) on 14 and 15 October 2019 in Gaborone, Botswana. The workshop was held under the theme, “Expanding renewable energy for access and development: the role of development finance institutions in Southern Africa” brought together a focussed group of key development finance experts from across the SADC member states as well as international cooperating partners.
The objectives of the workshop include:
- Identify barriers and binding constraints that DFIs face for financing renewable and accessible energy in SADC countries.
- Identify and share best practices for DFI engagement in renewable and accessible energy finance in SADC countries.
- Identify policy interventions that could overcome barriers and scale up renewable and accessible energy in SADC countries.
The outcomes of the workshop will inform a report on the role of development finance institutions for expanding renewable energy for access and development in Southern Africa.
