December 13, 2020, Cairo-Egypt: With the presence of H.E Minister of Local Development General Mahmoud Sahrawi, H.E. Minister of International Cooperation Dr. Rania El Mashat, representatives for EU, EBRD and other partners the consultancy service contract for Kitchener drain depollution solid waste project was signed to launch the first of its kind project in Egypt. RCREEE, Liban Consult AGM and Projacs consortium is honored to lead the consultancy services for the implementation and construction of the project.
Kitchener Drain is one of the severely polluted drains in Egypt resulting in significant environmental, economic and social harm. It extends 69 km and passes through the governorates of Kafr El Sheikh ("KES"), Gharbeya ("GHB") and Dakahleya ("DKH") and discharges into the Mediterranean Sea.
The newly signed service contract tackles mainly solid waste management of the Kitchener Drain in Egypt. Accordingly, it represents a key cornerstone in a larger investment programme aiming at the de-pollution of the Kitchener Drain alongside wastewater & sanitation and drain infrastructure rehabilitation.
“We are very optimistic that this project will contribute significantly to improving municipal solid waste management (MSWM) and introducing new technologies for waste treatment especially waste to energy to minimize the disposal of waste,” said RCREEE Head of Environment and Climate Change Unit, Eng. Ahmed Khalil.
Notably the project is implemented under the loan agreement between the Egyptian Government and the EU and EBRD as a funding agency. The project, considered to be the first of its kind in Egypt, will support the depollution of the drain and the Mediterranean Sea. It will also improve the health and environmental situation of the people living in the drain catchment area as well as strengthen the economy by improving the irrigation water quality in the three governorates.
