Climate Change

In March of 2010, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) sponsored a regional energy meeting in Golden, Colorado, that included the CNMI, American Samoa, and Guam. CNMI delegates from the Governor’s Office, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) and the Northern Marianas College (NMC) met with representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and senior principals from DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to discuss ways to improve energy efficiency and increase the deployment of renewable energy technologies in the Pacific.

The second meeting of the Steering Committee for the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) Steering Committee (SC) was held on 12th December 2017 together with the 8th Meeting of the Pacific Energy Advisory Group and the Workshop on Accelerating Renewable Energy Deployment in Small Island Developing States from the 11th – 15th December 2017 at the Novotel, Suva, Fiji.

Provided is the compilation of the meeting minutes and its accompanying annexes.

This Regional Synthesis Report summarises progress made towards the implementation of the two regional frameworks:
• The Pacific Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Management Framework for Action 2005–2016 (RFA)
• The Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change 2006–2016 (PIFACC)

Executive Summary - Climate change exacerbates the magnitude and impacts of climate variability and some natural hazards. The existence of some Pacific Island countries (PICs) is threatened by climate change. Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) are highly exposed to a range of natural hazards of hydro-meteorological origin (such as cyclones, droughts, landslides and floods) and geological origin (including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis).

This compendium showcases programmes and projects from across the Pacific region that address climate change and disaster risks, through climate change adaptation (CCA), disaster risk management (DRM) and/or greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

These forty case studies cover different topics across Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) and showcase significant work undertaken by the region to address climate and disaster-related challenges and to build resilience.

This NDC Implementation Roadmap 2017-2030 shall be considered a “living” document in that information expressed in this publication represents the Government of Fiji’s current understanding of the energy sector, and current understanding of mitigation actions (including technology, finance, capacity building, and technical assistance needs), which will

This document comprises of a collection of reports submitted by responsible officers of different programs within the Department of Energy and compiled by the Director. Tese
reports are against the 2016 Business Plans as required by PSC through the Director General’s office of the Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology, Geo-Hazards, Energy, Environment and Disaster Management.

The KIER is Kiribati's comprehensive energy roadmap, which takes into account renewable energy and energy efficiency potential in all sectors from 2017 to 2025. The findings of this roadmap show that power sector is a key area, where the ongoing efforts from the deployment of solar PV should be continued and complemented with and improvement of efficiency in Kiribati’s entire energy system, including electricity use, heating, cooling, and transport.

Vanuatu’s National Energy Road Map (NERM) was considered and endorsed by the Council of Ministers in 2013. The NERM is the policy framework for developing the

energy sector in Vanuatu.

The NERM identified five priorities for the energy sector: access, petroleum supply, affordability, energy security, and climate change. It set out objectives, targets and actions
to achieve these priorities and contribute to the NERM’s overall vision.

The inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee (SC) of the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) was held on 25th April 2017 during the Third Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting  at the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel, Nuku’alofa, Tonga.
