Climate Change

Renewables Readiness Assessment of the Marshall Islands produced by IRENA.The RRA study identified challenges to be addressed to scale up renewable energy in RMI. Recommended actions communicated to RMI Government and development partners. This recommended actions were converted into practical projects and 5 activities have been drafted. This activities are intended to be reviewed by the RMI MRD Energy Planning Division and using any necessary external support develop the project concepts into full project proposals to be submitted to development partners for funding.

This report provides a summary of project activities during the first 6 months of Year 1. This report is formatted to include a section on Global Project Setup and Management.

Climate change adaptation is the focus of concept note. The aim of the Project is an operating and viable integrated farming system that will enhance sustainable livelihoods and strengthen capacities to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change by demonstrating how farmers

The Project aims to reduce the risk to the water lens by effectively managing sanitation in a programmatic
approach by reducing risk to human health and coastal livelihoods.

This record holds 2 concept notes that were submitted by the Government of RMI for the EU-GIZ ACSE Programme implementation:

1. Strengthening coordination and planning to increase climate change resilience in RMI
2. Scientific assessment of groundwater resource, their responses to climate and population changes and sustainable provision of freshwater in Marshall Islands.

This record holds 2 concept notes that were submitted by Kiribati Government for ACSE Programme implementation:

1. Land Use & Coastal Areas Vulnerability & Adaptation Assessment (Strengthening the evidence base for decission making through development, application and institutionalization of analysis tools for land use and coastal zone mapping) - Location: Bairiki, Tarawa.
2. Renewable Energy Project - PV solar hybrid systems for boarding schools in the rural communities - Location: Tabuaeran & Abemama Islands.

ii).    Noted that in response to the PRDR funding proposal and subsequent separate discussions between SPC and Tonga with the World Bank, the Bank has drafted an internal TA concept paper to identify where the Bank can best add value to the PRDR development, including assessing the best modality for channelling their funds to the PRDR.

Biofuel Feasibility Study on Kiritimati Island, Final Draft, April 2012.  The objective of this study is to determine the available coconut resources in the Line Group and analyse the technical, economical, social, institutional and environmental feasbility of producing coconut oil (CNO) on Kiritimati Island and use it as a fuel subsitute in power  generation and transport.

Analysis shows that introduction of CNO as a diesel substitute could be an economically sound investment. It should view power generation as the main market for CNO.
