Official Commissioning of Pacific Environment Community Funds Project (PEC Fund Project) in Vava'u

Implemented by the Ministry of MEIDECC, the specific focus of the PEC Fund Project is on rural communities’ socio-economic improvement through solar power generation. H.E. Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga also attended the event as well as other Cabinet Ministers.

Under the PEC Fund Project, installation of 22 solar water pumps have been installed and operating in 16 villages of ‘Uta Vava’u, which includes – Koloa, Holeva, Tu’anekivale, Mangia, Houma, Ha’akio, Longomapu, Tu’anuku, Tefisi, Taoa, Pangaimotu, ‘Utulei,Talihau, Leimatu’a, ‘Utui, and Okoa.

There is also 36 solar freezers been installed in 20 remote islands of Vava’u, and Ha’apai remote islands as well. In Vava’u these islands are – Hunga, Ovaka, Lape, Matamaka, Nuapapu, Falevai, ‘Otea, Kapa’ Taunga, Ofu; and Fonoi, Mango, ‘O’ua, Tungua, Matuku, Kotu, Fotuha’a, Lofanga, and Mo’unga’one in the islands of Ha’apai.

Installation works was started on 3rd July 2017 which was conducted by Japanese based company, Shinyo Koeki Co. Ltd with its Tongan counterpart, Kingdom Energy. The selected groups of islands are seen as the most vulnerable areas to the adverse effects of climate change.
