Regional Harmonisation Workshop on EE Policy and Compliance Framework

EACREEE has conducted a regional Harmonization Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya to consolidate the feedback received from the EAC Partner States;  Republic of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan and Republic of Uganda on the draft EAC Energy Efficiency Policy and Compliance framework. The harmonisation workshop will be followed by a validation workshop in July 2024 and the adoption of Policy at the EAC level. Through the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliance (EELA) project, EACREEE has been supporting the development of the Regional Energy Efficiency Policy and Compliance framework for the East African Community (EAC). The draft Policy and Compliance Framework were developed, and National Consultations were conducted in each East African Community partner state.

The EAC Secretariat, EACREEE and Energy Efficiency Technical Officers from the Ministries Responsible for Energy in the EAC Partner States attended the Workshop. Focusing on the impacts of climate change and gender inclusion, the project seeks to work towards improved and harmonised regional policy and regulatory environment for energy-efficient lighting and Appliance for the region. Through the EAC regional compliance framework, Minimum Energy Performance standards for lighting were adopted by the EAC in 2022 and several countries have adopted them at the national level.

The development of the EAC Energy Efficiency Policy and Compliance Framework is under the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliance (EELA) project funded by the Government of Sweden through the Swedish Development Organisation (SIDA) with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation as the Lead Implementer. The Project is executed in the EAC by EACREEE and in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) by the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE).
