Fiji on path to establishing a Sustainable Energy Industry Association

The Pacific Islands has to embrace the “can do it attitude”   if it is to be successful with its low emission development effort, said Mark Borg, Team Leader – Programme Management Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF).

More than 25 representatives of the sustainable energy industry in Fiji gathered at the PIDF Headquarter at Nasese, Suva on 3 May 2019 to discuss the formation of a Fiji Sustainable Energy Consortium. The joint PIDF-PCREEE event is a follow up to earlier preliminary discussions conducted by the PCREEE.

Fiji is just about the only PIC that has developed a Roadmap for the implementation of its Nationally Determined Contributions. “This roadmap highlights Fiji’s commitment to low emission development (LED) with business and investment opportunities that are estimated at close to USD 3 billion dollars. There is therefore an urgent for the industry to mobilise itself, have a united voice and maximize the benefits from Fiji’s LED”, said Solomone Fifita, Manager of the PCREEE.

The consultation meeting agreed on concrete steps to be taken from now until the first annual general meeting of the FSEC in October / November 2019.
