Gibson Okezie Obasi Appointed Executive Director of ECREEE

Praia, Cabo Verde, September 2026 — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formally appointed Mr. Gibson Okezie Obasi as Executive Director of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), following his tenure as Acting Executive Director. He brings more than 20 years of experience in international development, institutional management, financial governance, programme leadership and regional economic integration.
Mr. Obasi has held several senior positions within the ECOWAS system, including Acting Executive Director of ECREEE, Acting Director of Administration and Finance, and Head of the Disbursement Division of the ECOWAS Commission. His extensive experience within ECOWAS has given him a strong understanding of regional institutions, financial management and the priorities of West African integration.
During his leadership at ECREEE, Mr. Obasi has contributed significantly to the Centre’s strategic planning, resource mobilisation, financial management and institutional strengthening. In recognition of his strong performance and significant contribution to advancing the Centre’s objectives, he was selected from among a range of candidates to assume the position of Executive Director. A notable achievement during his tenure has been his contribution to the recovery and repositioning of the Regional Off-Grid Electrification Project (ROGEP), helping lay the foundation for the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), valued at approximately USD 339 million.
His leadership has also contributed to strengthened financial reporting, donor confidence and operational efficiency, while supporting ECREEE’s continued financial sustainability.
As Executive Director, Mr. Obasi will lead ECREEE’s efforts to advance sustainable energy access, energy security and a just energy transition across West Africa. His vision is to position ECREEE as a Centre of Excellence for renewable energy and energy efficiency in the region, capable of translating regional policies and programmes into bankable investments, scalable solutions and tangible development impacts.
His leadership approach is centred on strategic excellence, sound governance, strong partnerships, innovation, institutional capacity and measurable results.
Mr. Obasi is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
